As Canada's largest hotel with 1,590 rooms and a business operating in a large community such as Toronto, the Delta Chelsea recognizes and respects its corporate social responsibility ensuring that our quest for sustainable solutions continues to grow and evolve.
Delta Greens is the most ambitious and comprehensive environmental sustainability program
within Canada’s hospitality industry. It touches on every aspect of the hotel business – from guest
services to construction to how we operate and maintain our properties to how we work with our
suppliers and engage with our employees.
In recognition of the Delta Chelsea’s environmental initiatives, the Hotel Association of Canada
(HAC) awarded the Delta Chelsea with a 4 Green Key ECOmmodation rating. This program is
essentially a measurement and performance tool for improving our environmental performance.
In order for the Delta Chelsea to reach the 5 Green Key ECOmmodation rating, the hotel is
evaluating the opportunities to further improve performance.
The positive impact on the environment in Toronto as a result of the program will be significant:
- The energy saved will be enough to power 836 homes for one year
- The carbon dioxide reduced will be equivalent to taking 821 cars off the road for one year
- The water saved will fill 32 Olympic swimming pools
- The waste reduced will fill 12 dumpster trucks
- The waste diverted will mean 12 fewer dumpster trucks going to landfill sites
Since 2005, the Delta Chelsea has been at the forefront of hotel waste management and through
the ongoing partnership with Turtle Island Recycling, it has exceeded both industry standards and
municipal targets in landfill diversion. In 2005, the diversion was 20% and by the end of 2010,
the Delta Chelsea diverted 82% of the waste stream to recycling.
The hotel has invested in a significant number of renovations to reduce water and electricity
consumption including low-flow fixtures, high efficiency boilers, and ozone friendly chillers.
In February 2009, the Delta Chelsea Hotel was recognized with the Hotel Association of
Canada’s Hall of Fame Award for Energy and Environment.
Delta is also committing to sharing its journey towards increased sustainability with the public
– via the “IRIS”, an interactive tracking tool that stands for Integrated Rating Indicator for
Sustainability. Delta’s IRIS will be posted prominently on the company’s website and updated
three times a year in collaboration with Loop Initiatives, the sustainability integration and
measurement consultancy that helped develop Delta Greens.
